Aber Instruments Ltd

The company’s biologists and electronics engineers developed a range of patented, high specification on-line instruments, including the Biomass Monitor for biotechnology applications, and the Yeast Monitor for use in breweries. The Yeast Monitor is now established as the standard for on-line yeast concentration measurement in brewing, and helps ensure consistent fermentation.

Aber Instruments is committed to research and development, and has designed three new products within the last 12 months.

These new products needed to meet stringent requirements under the CE Marking Directive, as well as the Low Voltage and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directives.

Assessing products so that they meet the requirements of European directives is difficult without specialised knowledge and use of expensive hardware.

InteliCoat Exopack Advanced Coatings

Exopack Advanced Coatings is a global leader in the manufacture of coated papers, film, and substrates, and provides specialist services such as contract coating and laminating. The company is based in Wrexham (where it has had a plant since 1968), and employs 130 staff - many in highly skilled roles. The current unit is 70,000 sq.ft, with 50,000 sq. ft. devoted to production space, and the remainder occupied by laboratories and administrative offices. In the last three years sales have increased by 20 per cent, and turnover now exceeds £16m. The company aims to grow the business by £2m per annum. The company concentrates on producing highly specialised components for a wide range of clients - complex, value added products that cannot be readily produced by the developing economies.

The first MAS Wales project looked at inventory management.

As Exopack Advanced Coatings works in a diverse range of markets, it was proving difficult to create a standard process for managing materials.

“One of the MAS Wales improvements involved introducing monthly inventory reviews,” says Chris Reed.

“Frequent reassessment of our needs has helped substantially reduce stock obsolescence, and has helped free up space in the plant as we hold less stock.

Most importantly of all, MAS Wales scrutinised every single aspect of our inventory processes, and implemented changes that saved us money - cash which has been put to better use developing the business.”

William O'Hanlon

William O'Hanlon has continually developed and created new ranges and fabric styles to suit the fashion shifts within the interiors market. Its brands include Cambrian Fabrics, High Style, New Generation and Sunlover.

As a growing company, William O’Hanlon identified the need to review its systems and structures, and introduce formal procedures for carrying out a broad variety of tasks.
